Hair and menopause: why it changes and how to look after it

Around menopause, many women notice that their hair becomes finer, less dense or drier. These changes are natural and gradual, and they can be supported.

What hormones change

Falling oestrogen levels alter the hormonal balance: the influence of androgens becomes relatively stronger, which can shorten the hair’s life cycle and reduce its diameter. The scalp also produces less sebum, which makes hair drier.

The right habits

  • Gentle, moisturising care and less heat (hairdryer, straightener).
  • Enough protein, which is essential for making keratin.
  • Good sleep and stress management.
  • A targeted course: biotin, zinc and selenium contribute to the maintenance of normal hair.

A course takes time

Hair grows about one centimetre a month, so it takes at least three months to judge any change. Our experts recommend two three-month courses a year, or continuous use.

When to see a doctor

Sudden or very heavy hair loss is not just a question of age: talk to your doctor or a dermatologist.
